Cochise County Announces New Elections Director

County Administrator Richard Karwaczka announced today the appointment of Tim Mattix as the new Elections Director of Cochise County. Karwaczka’ s decision is the final step in the hiring process. Karwaczka began a recruitment to fill this County leadership role on September 18. The first review of applicants was on October 9 and interviews conducted on October 10. Three candidates were interviewed and Mattix advanced as the successful selection.

Mattix formerly served in the roles of Deputy Clerk of the Board and later the Clerk of the Board for the Cochise County Board of Supervisors from November 2020 to July 2023. He has over 20 years of combined experience in election administration roles for the cities of Marana, Tempe and Dewey-Humboldt. While serving as Clerk of the Board for Cochise County, Mattix worked directly with the Elections Department on matters related to the Board of Supervisors.

“Tim’s experience and his extensive knowledge of election law and procedure make him an ideal candidate for this position,” said Karwaczka. “He also comes with the considerable advantage of having a past leadership role in Cochise County administration. He has earned the respect of fellow colleagues, and he has a reputation as a thorough and competent leader. The County Elections and Special Districts Department is in very safe hands. I am truly delighted to welcome Tim in his new role. He has my full confidence and I look forward to a new chapter for the voters of Cochise County as well as for our Elections staff.”

Mattix will start in his position on October 30 with a salary of $90,000. He expressed he looks forward to getting to work.

“I am honored to have been chosen to continue my public service to the voters of Cochise County as Elections Director. I have long wanted to return to an elections-related role, and I believe that my experience and dedication will serve me well as I accept this new challenge,” he said on Friday morning.
